Desert Storm:
Blackwater Founder Forms Emirates Secret Army
Erik Prince, founder of controversial military contractor Blackwater (now known as Xe), has been given over half a billion dollars by the rulers of the United Arab Emirates to form a secret army.
It is believed that the army of mercenaries is designed to prevent the spread of uprisings in the Arab world from threatening the rulers of the Emirates.
From The New York Times:
The force is intended to conduct special operations missions inside and outside the country, defend oil pipelines and skyscrapers from terrorist attacks and put down internal revolts, the documents show. Such troops could be deployed if the Emirates faced unrest in their crowded labor camps or were challenged by pro-democracy protests like those sweeping the Arab world this year.
