Pardon?:
Grooverider Freed From UAE Jail In Amnesty
by Simon Magus

grooverider.jpgGrooverider, the drum and bass DJ imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for posessing cannabis and pornography, has been freed at the start of the fasting season of Ramadan.

"We understand he's one of a number of Brits who are due to be released under an amnesty," said a spokesperson for the Foreign Office.

"This does not mean a quashed conviction."

"We believe there are around 11 or 12 who will be released imminently and who will then be deported."

The DJ, whose real name is Raymond Bingham, was given a four year sentence after inadvertently bringing 2.16g of cannabis with a street value of £10 into the notoriously intolerant country.

"The drugs were in my possession and I forgot I had them in my trousers," he said at the time.

Bingham was also found in possession of a pornographic DVD, which is illegal in the UAE.

He struggled to deal with his situation, bemoaning the fact that such a tiny amount of cannabis would have not attracted such a harsh sentence in his home country.

“I just want this to end and to never come back," he said in an interview conducted during his sentence.

"It was a small amount."

"Back home I would not even get prosecuted."

He served ten months of his jail term before his release under the amnesty -- a beneficiary of the Emirates' royal family tradition of giving some prisoners their liberty as Ramadan begins.

Before his conviction, the pioneering DJ had worked for BBC Radio 1 -- the station has been conspiciously silent in its support of Bingham in his plight.

The BBC has refused to clarify whether he will be returning to his former slot on Radio 1.

"He has only just got back to the country and is spending time with his family and friends, but he'll meet with Radio 1 management in due course and we'll see what happens from there," said a BBC spokesperson.
