Lose An Hour, Lose Twelve Days:
Innocent Youth Detained Due To Clock Cock-Up
by The Mullah
A 15-year-old boy was mistakenly jailed for 12 days when investigators lookng for a bomb hoaxer failed to realise that the times on vital phone records were incorrect.
The clocks had gone forward one hour at the start of Daylight Saving Time, but the clock on the phone system wasn't changed.
Hempfield Area High School received a hoax bomb threat on a student hotline at 3:17am and discovered a call had been made at that time by student Cody Webb.
Webb, by all accounts a well-behaved student, had actually made his call an hour before the bomb threat was placed.
But school officials investigating failed to realise that the call records used to accuse Webb were out by an hour.
After he protested his innocence, Webb claims that the school's principal said: "Well, why should we believe you? You're a criminal. Criminals lie all the time."
The Police then arrested Webb and he spent 12 days in a juvenile detention facility before the school eventually realised their mistake.
Tim Andrews, the lawyer representing Webb, explained: "The district attorney subpoenaed the cell phone records, and it didn't take more than a minute to see the times didn't match."
Webb was finally released when a state trooper failed to show up at a hearing.
Andrews added that "the boy's family is considering a law suit against the school district or police for false arrest."
