Lost Vagueness Festival
near Lewes, East Sussex
12 – 14 August 2005
review by Eli Saikadeli, photos Bill Vincent
Lost Vagueness has rapidly been gaining notoriety, although for many the first awareness of Lost is as result of stumbling into the furthest reaches of the Glastonbury festival area. This festival was the first solo weekender venture by this imaginative bunch that leads the field in the “neo-burlesque” genre.

This was one of those nights when I didn’t stop dancing.
With one great set after the other, the music, lights and atmosphere really hit the spot for the energetic crowd and me.

Plans announced for 'John Peel Day'
The BBC have announced that October 13th will be the first John Peel Day.
Hundreds of gigs will be taking place all over Britain in memory of the much-admired DJ. Radio 1 would like to enourage as many people to organise events as possible. Plans are also afoot for a major concert in London to coincide with Peel Day.
His widow Sheila Ravenscroft said:
"John would have been honoured and fairly amazed that the anniversary is being marked in such a way."
"He would appreciate that in years to come Peel Day will give new bands across the country the chance to be heard."

Sean Penn In Iran
Hollywood actor and occasional activist Sean Penn has published a series of diary entries from his recent travels in Iran.
From the start, it is clear that he's a long way from home:
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very important announcement to make. For all our female passengers, by decree of the government of Iran, all female visitors are required to keep their heads covered. In your own interest, therefore, we ask you to put on a scarf before leaving the aircraft in Tehran. Thank you."
With that, women clamored for the lavatory. One at a time as they exited, hundreds of years of transformation had occurred. All of these modern women, who would've looked quite at home dancing in a Paris nightclub, were now covered head to toe in black chadors, makeup scrubbed from their faces, cleavages and midriffs a memory.

So Damn Early: A Certain Ratio Live at Cargo, August 11th 2005
By The Mullah
It could have been all so different for A Certain Ratio. One of the first acts to be signed to legendary Manchester label Factory Records, they were doomed to be overshadowed by labelmates Joy Division, later to mutate into New Order.
But instead of touring stadiums and being the soundtrack to the lives of millions, they ended up as music teachers back in their home town of Manchester. However, this version of events fails to explain why Soul Jazz saw fit to re-release some of their back catalogue a couple of years ago -- which then promptly flew off the shelves.

I Don't Do Faux: Two Lone Swordsmen Live at Glade Festival 2005
By The Mullah
Andrew Weatherall is smiling. But the original moody DJ is not sporting the look of an arrogant shit-eater. This is the expression of a man clearly enjoying himself on stage. Which is something of a culture shock to those of us who've grown up on tales of his legendary grumpiness.

Loch Stock and Two Smoking Turntables
at Grand Junction Arms - 6th August
Munchies Mews Productions
And a little Finger. A field along the canal
A few months ago I went to the first Munchies Mews party, and this was about my forth, the first one was fantastic, and they just keep getting better and better. The party is free and the setting is perfect (providing it’s not raining). It’s a few minutes walk from Harlesden tube, in the beautiful beer garden of the Grand Junction Arms, which runs along the side of a canal. It’s on the edge of an industrial estate, but shrouded in trees, with not a residential habitat in sight.

Glade Festival
@ Aldermaston near Reading
15 – 17 July 2005
review by Eli Saikadeli, photos Bill Vincent
![]()
After such a great start last year with the first ever Glade Festival, the tickets for the 2005 festival sold out almost immediately. Good news travels fast and Glade was certainly one of the highlights of last year’s festival season and Glade 2005 promised to be bigger and better than before.

“Break The System Down”
Antiworld's Indoor Festival 2nd Birthday at SEOne – 23 July 2005
review by Jam Gorilla
photos Jam Gorilla & Prosiak
This review is coming with the expected delay as everything good in life has it coming.
Maturing that is. But then again reviewing Antiworld’s Indoor Festival is not an easy task even for the seasoned practitioner. Definitely not considering massiveness of this event, which leaves lasting impression on those attending it.

Ahhhh… the Fridge! It will always be a special venue; it was the first one I ever went to, back in 1999, (bit of a late comer to the scene, I know, but I think I’ve made up for it!) With a head full of untapped serotonin, Samsara at the Fridge blew my mind. The beginning of a new career.

New Opening for Ecstasy?
![]()
Remember George Ricaurte and his famous 2002 experiment with injecting ecstasy into monkeys?
Two of the animals died as a result of the trial and two others were in such a distress they were not given any further doses. Six weeks later on, dopamine levels in surviving animals were about 65 percent down. If the same occurred in humans, the consequences would be tragic and lethal.

h = Qx(12+3s/8) keeps you upright - apparently
In the endless battle to tell you the kind of information you didn't know you need to know, scientists have explained the formula that wearers of high-heeled shoes can use to work out how high they can go – provided they are good in computing while they shop around.
